Nigerian state governor signed a
compulsory health tax bill into law
Cross Rivers state governor has
signed a new health insurance bill
into law.
The bill signed by Governor
Ben Ayade will require citizens of
Cross River State to pay at least,
mandatory N1000 every month.

Tagged “Ayadecare”, the law seeks to
provide medical insurance cover at
primary, secondary and tertiary levels
for all citizens of the state.

Commenting at the signing ceremony,
held in Calabar, the governor
disclosed that the intent of the bill
will ensure that “the strong pays for
those who are medically challenged”.
He said “the law provides very
expressly that a minimum of N1000
monthly will be paid by every Cross
Riverian as well as those residing in
the state. The N1000 becomes your
insurance for that month and that
gives you access to full medical
attention.”

He described the bill as most
spiritual, and that it derived its origin
from a true ‘communitarian African
culture’ which enjoins all to provide
for others.

Ayade said his government will have
nothing to do with the funds that will
emanate from the scheme, but that
they will help to enforce payment. He
called on lawmakers in the state to
draw up modalities for its
management.

Ayade said the law would ensure the
setting up of specialist health care
centres across the senatorial districts
of the state.
